Directory template(s)...

I love the flexibility of directories in Jadu, we're planning on using them for many different things (courses, majors, faculty/staff listing, office/department listings, IT knowledge base help sheets, service catalogs, etc.). The potential for directories is exciting, however, the default styling of directories is rather bland and every directory is displayed the same.
It would be very cool to have the ability to use the existing homepage designer to create a "directory record template" then apply a chosen template to a particular directory or category of directories. We will want to display our majors and courses differently than our office/staff directories, and our IT helpsheets will be entirely different, but we need the organizational/searchable/functionality of directories to really leverage what we want them to accomplish.
I was attempting, via custom homepages, to create a single homepage for all our majors, but it dawned on me that I was really reinventing the wheel and what I really need to do is modify the public_html/site/scripts/directory_record.php file to include custom templates to display the different directory records based on their directory or category.
My big concern obviously is having that file overwritten with each update/upgrade and having to maintain those modifications long-term.
Has anyone else accomplished this kind of thing and how was it done?
